Here in the cold north we have for ages relied on heated shelters to stay alive and operational. The highly flexible and easily transportable two-part Hawu tents are the latest step in the long evolutionary line of Finnish stove heated tents.
What sets the Hawu apart from our regular field camp tents is the two-part structure, allowing it to be split up for transport, pitched around tree trunks and pitched as two separate lean-to type shelters. The tent halves connect to each other via zippers, which are covered by rolled fabric covers for rain protection.
The zippers connecting the tent pieces and their external covers are designed to facilitate fast emergency exit when necessary – open the zipper on the inside and push yourself through, the zipper rain covers open up under pressure.
The triangular entrance closes via a vertically oriented side zipper, with the bottom edge hanging freely over the threshold. In the unlikely case of the zipper failing the entrance has webbing loops and tabs on the inside for use as an emergency closure mechanism.
The roof of the tent has an opening for a stove chimney. Each tent comes with a sealed stove jack cover (to cover the opening when the tent is used without a stove) and a steel stove jack piece with a 80 mm internal diameter for use with stove pipes up to 70 mm in diameter. The stove jack and stove jack cover are attached to the outside of the tent roof using hook-and-loop and cord loops and toggles.
Webbing loops hanging from the top and lower corners offer a means to attach drying lines/poles or hang small accessories such as lanterns.
The tips of the tent halves feature small hoods to cover the top when pitched using a centre pole. The top can be opened on both or one side for ventilation.
The corner guy lines are made from webbing and quickly adjustable via spring loaded cam buckles. No need to fiddle around with knots! Each corner also features a webbing loop at ground level for staking the sides to the ground.
The skirt should always be pulled inside the tent to prevent it from freezing to the ground in cold weather. When used with a groundsheet the groundsheet should be placed on top of the tent skirt, resulting in a clean and waterproof floor for added user comfort.

Pitching methods
The special thing with the Hawu design is the two-part construction and ease of pitching. The Hawu tent requires only a central attachment point (centre pole or tree trunk) and stakes for the corner guy lines, no corner poles. These features offer flexibility in various terrain, you can pitch the tent between trees or around a tree, and faster pitching and takedown times compared to other field camp tents.
Where possible you can also leave out both the centre pole and stakes, and make improvised stakes from wood on-site and pitch the tent around a tree. This eliminates the need to carry the heavy and bulky centre pole and stake set with you.
With centre pole: With the two halves of the tent connected the tent can be pitched with the included centre pole.
Around a tree trunk: With one of the two connecting zippers opened the tent can be pitched around a tree trunk, with the tree trunk acting as a centre pole. The included packing straps are used to secure the top of the tent to the tree trunk.
Separate lean-to shelters: The two halves of the tent can also be used as separate lean-to style shelters. They can be pitched using the centre pole or attached to a tree trunk.
